👋 I’m Cristian, a Software Engineer With 15+ Years of Experience in the Consumer Electronics Industry
About me…

Immigrant of hispanic descent, became a US resident at age 14. Lived in Tucson Arizona where I attended High School. Continued my education in junior college and finished my undergraduate education by graduating with honors from the University of Arizona.

I gratefully and proudly became a naturalized citizen of the United States Of America in 2008. My Bachelors Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering kickstarted my professional career which has continued to open doors of opportunities for me. My profession took me to Silicon Valley where I worked for Intel. After a number of years I took a position in the Core Operating Systems team at Apple. While working for Apple, I completed a graduate program from Santa Clara University in 2018 where I obtained a Masters Degree in Computer Science.

In 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, I relocated to Texas to start a family and continued to work remotely for Apple until 2023. Apple ended the remote work policy and I was required to relocate to Austin. I had just bought a new house here in the Bryan/College Station area and my wife was about to have our first baby, relocating again was not the best decision for my family so I decided to resign my position and take some time to look for opportunities here in the Bryan/College Station area. During this transition time I started a company to invest in real estate.

Amongst the most important skills for me has been the ability to understand fundamentals and apply them for thinking from first principles. This has allowed me to quickly adapt to each new project and learn a new technology stack each time. This is essential when new projects bring in a new technology that must be integrated into larger established systems.

Below you will find more details about my experience and education. In addition, you can download pdf versions of my cover letter and one pager resume.

If you think that I could help your organization achieve your objectives, feel free to get in touch.

– Thank you.

Cristian Bruce Ortiz

After that project I was involved with the development and releases of iBoot firmwares and other platform software components for all major Apple silicon platforms including iPhones, iPads, Apple watch, Apple TVs and the first generation of Apple silicon M1 macs. My largest impact to the business was the acceleration of the bringup processes. This entailed coordination with the global engineering team and managing intense around the clock 24/7 work cycles from first silicon to operating system ready. Each bringup presented the opportunity to improve techniques and we managed to reduce bring up time from weeks to days. This was the motivation for my promotion to ICT4.

Software Engineer – Intel Corp.

September 2009 – 2016

  • GNU Toolchain
  • Linux environment
  • Tooling for cache coherency
  • High performance computing
  • Larrabee microarchitecture

I joined the Xeon server team as a software engineer and started working on tooling for the Larrabee microarchitecture where my area of focus was cache coherency. My team leveraged the Linux kernel to create an execution environment that allows arbitrary assembly algorithms to be loaded and stress run directly on hardware. This gave precision to the tests so that we could target edge cases of the cache geometry on the chip. The environment was a standard GNU toolchain with the codebase in c and c++ a makefile build system and perl scripts to automate various processes.

Rotation Engineer – Intel Corp.

September 2008 – 2009

  • Analog and Digital Ciruit Design
  • Technical Marketing
  • Silicon Verification and Vector Testing
  • Software Test Tooling

My first full time position after graduating was a member of the internal rotation leadership program at Intel. This 1 year leadership program gave me the opportunity to quickly sample different roles within the company. The roles included non engineering positions such as technical marketing where I supported the engineering team with product launches demos and other tasks such as technical documentation releases. Other roles I had the opportunity to try were engineering roles within analog circuit design teams and new silicon testing.

Marketing Extern – Intel Corp.

September 2006 – 2007

  • Coordinated campaign materials with 3rd parties
  • Technical Marketing for retailers
  • Brand representative to the consumer
  • Events for the Core2 Duo line of processors

Paid marketing role that started after the end of the summer internship. I managed brand representation for the Core2 Duo processors and continued in this role for the remaining time of my undergraduate studies. This was a great opportunity to become knowledgable about the Core2 line of processors and share that with others. I had the responsibility of building relationships with 3rd party retailers delivering product samples for them, designing in-store demos and providing marketing literature. An important part of the role was to make sure that retail employees had sufficient product information for consumers and in this way drive sales through technical knowledge.

Software Intern – Intel Corp.

Summer 2007

Education

Santa Clara University – Graduate

I completed the Masters in Computer Science program while working full time at Apple. My goal for this degree was to learn the fundamentals of computation as it relates to foundational software. The practical side of this program focused on firmwares and operating systems. However I also touched on the topic of computational intelligence such as genetic algorithms and neural networks to improve information security within systems. This opened up the opportunity for me to work on the Secure Enclave Processor team at Apple.

Masters Degree in Computer Science and Engineering

The University of Arizona – Undergraduate

My undergraduate Bachelors in Electrical Engineering degree was focused on digital circuits and custom computing using FPGA hardware. This degree gave me the engineering fundamentals in math and physics in order to understand electronic components and the computing architectures that rise from them. This program also opened the doors for me to internship opportunities that were very valuable as a student.

Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering
